Rain, Snow, Landslides, and Floods: California Faced Dangerous Weather
Heavy rains and snow that fell on Tuesday and Wednesday in California threaten landslides to the state burnt out by forest fires.
Bad weather has already led to the closure of sections of the Pacific Coast Highway and Interstate 5, writes USA Today.
It is expected that precipitation in the region will stop no earlier than Thursday. Total precipitation in the region can reach 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada, as well as in some of the mountains surrounding Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
The National Weather Service reported that up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where blizzard warnings are in effect, can fall up to 6 feet (183 cm) of snow, and wind speed will reach 110 miles (177 km) per hour.
The most severe weather conditions due to the storm are expected in California on the evening of January 16.
The areas burned out in last year's forest fires will be most susceptible to destructive debris flows and landslides, but the threat of mudflows is not limited to parts of the state affected by the fires.
An order for mandatory evacuation was issued on Tuesday in Ventura District and other areas affected by recent fires. The meteorological service warns that precipitation intensity can reach 0,75-1,25 inches (2-3 cm) per hour, which can lead to strong landslides.
In Los Angeles County, the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu was closed for several hours on Monday due to mudflows.
Northwest of Los Angeles, in the district of Santa Barbara, on Tuesday also issued an order for voluntary evacuation.
In Grapevine, 80 miles north of Los Angeles, snow and ice caused the Interstate 5 highway to close, vehicles were stuck there for hours.
The town of Pulga in northern California, near Paradise, which was almost completely destroyed by fire two months ago, also received a warning of evacuation on Tuesday evening.
Warnings of sudden flooding and strong winds will take effect by midday Wednesday in the Sacramento and San Francisco areas.
