CIA director is confident that Russia will continue to interfere in US affairs

Pompeo argues that Russian interests in Syria do not coincide with American ones, so finding common ground with Moscow on how to resolve the conflict in the country is not easy.

The CIA director made the announcement at the Aspen Security Forum, an annual gathering of intelligence and national security experts in Aspen, Colorado.

When asked what Mike Pompeo thinks about interfering in the US 2016 presidential election in the United States, the CIA director replied that he was still confident that Moscow had interfered in the election of the American president, as well as in elections that took place earlier. He calls the relationship between Russia and the United States "complicated."

“They like when there is a permanent military point and they like to bring trouble to America. I think they are trying to find such places where they can make life difficult for us, and those where they can extract something useful for themselves, ”Pompeo said.

According to Pompeo, the efforts that Russia uses in the fight against the militants of the "Islamic State" in Syria are minimal. And the allegations that Russia is an ally of the United States and Syria are not supported by anything. The events that take place in Syria are proof of that. And Russia is ready to maintain its presence in Syria, in particular, because they like the Mediterranean port of Tartus.

Moreover, it is difficult to imagine a stable Syria under President Bashar Assad, whom Pompeo called the "puppet of Iranians". The Iranians have now strengthened their position in Syria.

But despite this, Pompeo nevertheless expressed the hope that there would be places in the world where the United States and Russia would be able to unite in the fight against terrorism.

Pompeo also says that the Trump administration is looking for ways to rebuff Iran, which seeks to gain credibility throughout the Middle East.

“When our strategy is ready, you will see a fundamental shift in our policy towards Iran, I am confident of it,” he said.
