The number of illegal immigrants from Mexico has almost halved

The number of illegal migrants arriving in the US across the border with Mexico has decreased by 40% in the first 2 months of the current year.

It is reported by the Air Force, with reference to the Minister of Homeland Security, John Kelly.

According to Kelly, the number of detentions at the US border with Mexico in February was the lowest in the last 5 years.

According to the US Border Patrol, 31 people were apprehended crossing the southern border in January, and 578 in February.

“Since President Trump took office on January 20, we have seen a serious decline (in the number of migrant arrivals). This is a good trend and means fewer people are putting themselves and their families at risk of being attacked by traffickers,” Kelly said.

He also added that the cost of illegal services to smuggle migrants across the southern border increased from $ 3,5 thousand to $ 8 thousand.

Restricting illegal migration, including from Mexico, was one of the key campaign promises of Donald Trump. In this regard, opponents accused the president of racism.

In late January, Donald Trump signed order to build a wall on the United States border with Mexico. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer explained that such a protective measure would limit the “influx of drugs, crime and illegal immigrants” into the United States.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto condemned Trump’s decision to build the wall and said that Mexico would not pay for it.
