Unmanned truck Uber made the first commercial flight
The truck drove 120 miles (about 193 km), accompanied by a police convoy. The truck driver, according to the company, was on a bed in the back of the cab. The purpose of the trip was to prove that unmanned trucks can independently drive in open areas.
AB InBev reports that such technologies will save $ 50 million if the beverage manufacturer uses them in the company's distribution network, even if the driver is in the car’s cabin. Savings will be made by reducing fuel costs and more frequent supplies.
The Otto-Uber team agreed with a Colorado regulator (where the trip went) to obtain permission to deliver and organize a police convoy. Otto representatives drove around the track for 2 weeks to study it carefully. The team planned to make the trip early in the morning, when the movement is not dense enough, and on a clear day. Last Thursday, October 20, the conditions were met and the trip took place.
The company plans not to produce its own trucks, but to buy them on the side, as Volvo does. Now negotiations are underway with car manufacturers.
We remind you that Uber acquired Otto, a startup developing unmanned driving technology this summer. In September, it was reported that the company will begin shipping in the 2017 year.
