Biden will send 1500 troops to the border with Mexico: they must contain the influx of illegal immigrants

The Biden administration plans to send an additional 1500 troops to the US-Mexico border in anticipation of an influx of migrants. Title 42 expires next week CNN.

The US military has long supported the Department of Homeland Security at the border, and the influx of personnel to the area is not unprecedented. There are currently about 2500 National Guard troops on the border.

Sources said that, as before, the troops will perform administrative functions, not law enforcement. The sources added that their assistance is intended to free up resources in the Department of Homeland Security so that US Customs and Border Protection can work more freely on the ground.

“At the request of DHS, DOD will temporarily provide 1500 troops for 90 days to help CBP at the border. These 1500 troops will fill critical gaps such as ground detection and monitoring, data entry and depot support. They will not be doing any law enforcement work,” the US official said in a statement.

Later on May 2, Pentagon spokesman General Pat Ryder confirmed that Defense Chief Lloyd Austin approved the deployment.
“Military personnel will not be directly involved in law enforcement activities. This deployment to the border is consistent with other forms of DHS military support over the years,” he said.

The Department of Homeland Security also released a statement confirming the troop dispatch, stating that "Department of Defense personnel will perform non-law enforcement duties such as ground detection and monitoring, data entry, and depot support." Department of Defense personnel have never and will never engage in law enforcement or interact with migrants or other persons in DHS custody."

Expected influx of migrants

Officials note an increase in the number of migrants who cross the US-Mexico border in anticipation of the expiration of Section 42.

Section 42 is a federal law that allows the government to deny people entry to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It was implemented at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and allowed border authorities to expel certain migrants quickly. Section 42 expires May 11th. There have been about 7000 daily collisions on the US southern border in recent days, and the number is expected to increase in the coming weeks.

Last July, DHS Secretary Alejandro Majorcas asked Defense Chief Lloyd Austin to provide troops to assist the CBP from October 1, 2022 to September 2023. Austin approved the deployment of 2500 troops to the border, who remain there now.

The Trump administration has approved similar deployments of troops to the border. In early 2019, more than 3000 additional troops were deployed to the US southern border to boost security, joining the 2300 troops already there.

The expected influx of migrants next week comes at a critical juncture for Biden, who will have to navigate yet another potential border crisis after his nomination in the 2024 election. This opens up Biden to attack from all sides. Republicans are already using the issue to oppose the president in the upcoming election. And Biden's allies also argue that his enforcement measures are too harsh.

“We expect the number of clashes on our southern border to increase as smugglers seek to take advantage of this change and are already diligently spreading disinformation that after the repeal of Section 42, the border will be open. Multiple clashes will put a strain on our entire system, including our dedicated and heroic workforce and our communities,” Mallorcas said.

“Let me be clear: our border is not open and will not be open after May 11,” he added.
