US Army quietly dismisses immigrant recruits

Immigration lawyers told AP that they were aware of more than 40 recruits and immigrant reservists who were fired from the service or whose status is now in question.

Some soldiers told the AP that they did not know why they were fired. Others said they were called a “security threat” because of relatives abroad or because their control checks were incomplete.

Representatives of the Pentagon and the army told the news agency that they could not comment on this information or say whether there were any policy changes due to an expected trial.

The Department of Defense told AP that “members of the service (that is, contract-based recruits, on active duty, in the guard and in the reserve) and those with honorary discharge are protected from deportation.”

Immigration attorneys told AP that many immigrants received an “uncharacteristic characteristic” that questioned their ability to stay in the United States.

Immigrants can obtain citizenship if they receive an honorary discharge. The AP reported that basic training was postponed for retired immigrant soldiers, which means that they cannot become naturalized citizens.

Recruits must have legal status in the United States before joining the army. About 10 000 immigrants are currently working in the army, most of whom go to the army.

The reports come against the background of the trump administration's suppression of immigration, including the “zero tolerance” policy, according to which all immigrants who have entered the country illegally face prosecution and are shared with children.
