Amazon Prime will add advertising to movie and TV streams: users cancel subscriptions en masse

Amazon Prime account holders are canceling their subscriptions due to the streamer's decision to add advertising to Prime Video, reports Ladbible.

Prime Video has sent out emails to customers warning them of "upcoming changes" to their account. The streamer will add advertising to its platform.

For the USA and Canada, the new system will be introduced in the coming days - January 29.

The same will soon await customers in Germany and also in the UK, unless they are willing to pay an extra $3,80 every month to enjoy ad-free viewing.

Amazon said this will "allow it to invest in compelling content and grow those investments going forward."

“We aim to have significantly fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers,” the company told customers in an email.

People cancel subscriptions

Some users complained on Reddit. Many decided to cancel their subscriptions immediately.

"It's horrible. If you already have an annual membership - they won't be able to change it until your current membership is renewed,” one wrote.

“I just canceled my subscription. Received a refund for the remainder of my annual subscription,” said a second user.

“Eh, when I gave up Netflix, I thought I would regret it. But no, I won’t regret Amazon either,” concluded a third.

“I just canceled my subscription and left a comment that the advertisement violates the original terms of the contract,” admitted an angry user.

One person who claims to be familiar with the matter wrote: “Working in the industry and growing advertising revenue is the new frontier. This is the "revolutionary" future of streaming. What they don't realize is that they have created an entire generation that WILL NOT WATCH ADVERTISING. If that means piracy, then piracy will become a reality again."
