Russia expels US diplomats and declares them persona non grata

The US Embassy in Moscow on March 23 received a list of its diplomats who were declared "persona non grata," a State Department spokesman said. According to Russian media, this was a response to US actions to fire Russian employees at the UN. The edition told in more detail Reuters.

Washington stated that expels 12 Russian diplomats from the country's diplomatic mission to the UN in New York for national security reasons, and later announced that he would expel another Russian from the UN who he said was a spy.

Russia, which denies the accusations, has told the United States it will kick out an unspecified number of US diplomats in response to the moves.

“The American side was firmly stated that any hostile actions of the United States against Russia would receive a decisive and adequate response,” the Russian agency said in a statement.

The move came at a time when the United States and its allies were mulling further sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

A State Department spokesman said: "We can confirm that on March 23 the US Embassy received a list of diplomats declared persona non grata by the Russian Foreign Ministry."

“This is Russia's last useless and unproductive step in our bilateral relations. Now more than ever, it is important that our countries have the necessary diplomatic staff to facilitate communications between our governments,” said a State Department spokesman.

It is not yet specified how many people have become persona non grata and when they will have to leave Russia.
