Medicare Advantage insurance will soon cover food and air conditioners
Conditioners for people with asthma, healthy food, and homemade meals can be some of the major benefits added to Medicare Advantage next year.
Monday Centers Medicare and Medicaid expanded the ability to identify health-related benefits that insurers can include in a health insurance package Medicare Advantage.
"Beneficiaries Medicare Advantage will receive more additional benefits, making it easier for them to live healthier and more independent lives,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma.
Of the 61 million people registered in Medicare last year, 20 millions chose Medicare Advantage, a private alternative to the traditional government program. Advantage plans to limit participants to a network of providers. Similar restrictions may apply to new benefits.
Many plans Medicare Advantage already offer some health benefits that are not covered by traditional Medicaresuch as glasses, hearing aids, dental care and gym memberships.
Many beneficiaries switched to Medicare Advantage because of their added value and reduced personal expenses.
United health, the largest US health insurer, welcomes the opportunity to expand benefits, said Matt Burns, a company spokesman.
"Benefits Medicare should not be a one-off, and continued rate stability and greater flexibility in options allows health plans to provide a more personalized health care experience,” he said.
But lawyers, including David Lipschutz, are concerned about those who may be left without these privileges.
"It's great for people in the plans Medicare Advantagebut what about most people who have traditional Medicare?, - he asked. - Since we are more inclined to favor Medicare Advantage, it hurts people with traditional Medicare».
Details of benefits packages Medicare Advantage 2019 must first be approved by CMS and will be released in the fall when the annual open registration starts. It is possible that all new benefits will not be available to all beneficiaries, because the proposed plans have “huge differences across the country,” says Gretchen Jacobson, deputy director of the Kaiser Family Foundation program for policy Medicare.
