In the US, during a protest against the concert Matsueva arrested Ukrainian activist
On November 13, police arrested Ukrainian diaspora activist Alexa Chopivskaya during a protest in Washington, D.C., against the “Concert for Unity” organized with the participation of the Russian Embassy, where Russian conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev performed, who signed a letter in support of the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Crimea.
Alex and her mother distributed flyers to the concert visitors, reports “Voice of America".
The guard of the cathedral asked the women to leave the territory, but Alex, who studied in the private girls' school at the cathedral, declared that she had the right to remain in the territory of her native organization.
After that, the security chief called the police, and the officers arrested Alex.
According to the security chief, a protocol will be drawn up there and released, but at the same time Chopivska will be banned from entering the territory of the cathedral for a year.
Later, the woman confirmed that she was accused of unlawful invasion of private territory and that she was barred from entering the territory of the cathedral during the year. She intends to challenge the charges in court.
“This is a national church. It is open to everyone. It sounds like I climbed over a fence. People walk there all the time, everyone can enter the territory of the cathedral. Besides, I studied there for 14 years. For me, this is like a second home,” said Chopivskaya.
According to her, the police kept her in a cell for about 5 hours, and then released her.
“The concert was advertised as a “Concert for Unity.” However, Russia has shown aggression in Ukraine and Georgia. Why such unity and with whom? Russia now believes that it can start wars, violate international law, interfere in elections abroad, and it will still be welcomed in America,” Chopivskaya said indignantly.
The remaining protesters - immigrants from Russia and Ukraine - moved from the cathedral territory down the street.
