87 days of smog: Record air pollution recorded in Southern California

Southern California already 87 day suffers from smog, this is the longest period of air pollution in the region, recorded over the past 20 years, writes Ls.

The air pollution began on June 19 and continued through July and August, exceeding the maximum permissible concentration of air pollutants every day in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The situation did not change until September 14, when air pollution dropped to "moderate" levels of ozone, a lung-damaging gas found in smog that causes asthma and other respiratory diseases.

In Southern California, smog often happens in the summer, which lasts for several weeks, but environmental experts say that this year has been able to hold on for too long and is alarming, demanding action.

Okrug authorities cannot say for sure if this summer could be the longest. The Environmental Protection Agency does not monitor violations of federal health standards, as they “are not useful or significant indicators for assessing trends in air quality.”

In 2017, smog days were fixed in the region in 145, in 2016 - in 132 days and in 2015 - in 113 days.

The authorities attributed the appearance of smog to hotter weather and more resistant inversion layers, which intensify as they approach the ground. They also plan to study whether climate change affects smog.

Experts say that the intensity of smog in Southern California is falling, but in the long run the situation is getting worse. Due to exhaust gases and air pollution, the climate is changing, and if this problem is not solved, then by the year 2031 we can expect a reduction in the ozone layer. Environmentalists believe that it is necessary to develop a plan for air purification and implement it in small cities. According to them, in order for the air purification plan to work, it is necessary to increase funding to 1 billion dollars a year.
