575 rabbis supported gay requests to use surrogate mothers
The 575 rabbis signed a letter to the Israeli government demanding that same-sex couples be allowed to use the services of surrogate mothers.
The author of the letter was the North American NGO A Wider Bridge, which is engaged in supporting the LGBT community in Israel, says Rtvi.
The organization calls the open letter a response to another letter, which 200 signed by authoritative rabbis in late July. In it, they opposed the rights of gays to use the services of surrogate mothers, calling the LGBT community "perverts" who are "vicious lifestyle."
The dispute between the two parties was caused by a recently passed bill that allowed single mothers to resort to surrogate motherhood. Before the hearings, its initiators promised to make amendments that give that right to same-sex couples.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu first expressed support for this idea, but then refused to support the amendments. As a result, the bill was approved in its original form.
After that, thousands of protests of the LGBT community and supporters took place in Israel. In Tel Aviv, 100 thousand people took part in the rally.
