A resident of Florida will sit down for two years for a fictional disease
A woman who collected $ 51 000 donations, stating that she was dying of cancer, was sentenced to two years in federal prison.
The scammer, Veduti Hobray, created a page on GoFundMe, where she said that she had cancer. To persuade, the woman shaved her head and also changed the medical report, which stated that she had no abnormalities.
Veduti Hobray, who was known as Shinovi Deokaran, even deceived her boyfriend and two sons, who helped her raise money for the treatment of leukemia between the years 2014 and 2016. The money came not only through the GoFundMe pages, but also through fundraising organized by her son and comrades on the football team of Ardsley High School, New York.
Hobray later moved to Orlando, Florida. She was arrested by the FBI in August 2017.
Prosecutors said that more than 400 people helped her.
Some members of the community, before sentencing, complained that Khobray had sowed distrust in the community because of her fraud.
In addition, Hobray blamed her boyfriend, saying that it was his idea and he cut off her hair while she slept. However, this version was not confirmed.
The 38-year-old scammer now needs not only to return $ 51 938 donations, but also to pay $ 47 741 to victims.
