New Yorker earns $ 400 per day playing chess in the park

Six years ago, Ambakisye Osayaba decided to take a big step - he quit part-time cleaner at the central park and began playing chess full-time, writes New York Post.

Now he earns up to $ 400 per day, playing with everyone on a portable table.

“This is the best life I’ve ever had,” said Osayaba, 59, who “teaches chess.”

Osayaba takes $ 3 per game without betting. If you want to bet, the winner will receive $ 5. He also offers 30 minute lessons for $ 20. In the park plays all year round.

“People come in all the time with a desire to learn,” Osayaba said.

28-year-old Viktor Raso studied Osayaba five days a week for a two-week course.

“When I first came, I knew the rules, but I didn’t know anything about the strategy,” said Raso, a clothing store coordinator Expresswho is having lunch in the park. “I followed Osayaba’s advice and he taught me.”

The only way to meet Osayaba is to be at his table. “I threw my phone off the Brooklyn Bridge,” Osayaba said. “You have to give the game your full attention.”

Osayaba’s highest-ranking opponent was Japanese Grandmaster’s friend Hikaru Nakamura, Maria De Rosa, who is also the champion of Italy.

Osayab was 10 years old in 1968 when he received a chess set for Christmas. “It was a cheap plastic set, but I liked it,” said Osayaba, who grew up poor with 17 siblings in a tiny apartment in Harlem. He played chess every day with the local librarian.

“I really like being the best,” he said. “I never stop.”
