A resident of Minnesota met with a man who was transplanted the face of her dead husband
Through the 16 months, Lilly Ross first met a man who had her late husband Cullen's face transplanted.
She, along with their son Leonard, saw Eendie Sanders in the library of the Mayo Clinic. Seeing Sanders, she burst into tears, after which they hugged tightly.
In 2006, 21-year-old Andy Sandness from Wyoming tried to take his own life. The guy shot himself in the chin. The shot disfigured most of his face, but he survived. As soon as the young man came to a stable condition, the doctors tried to correct his face, but the lack of a jaw, nose and teeth did not allow for a high-quality restoration procedure.
After 10 years, in 2016, at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, he had a face transplant. The operation lasted 56 hours. Andy got the face of Cullen Ross who suited him in all respects, who committed suicide and left his wife Lilly in the eighth month of pregnancy.
Lilly agreed to donate not only her late husband's face, but also other organs - lungs, kidneys and more - to save the lives of other people.
Before the meeting, the woman was worried that the meeting with Sanders would remind her of Cullen, but then pulled herself together and said that the appearance of Andy and Cullen was not identical. They had different eyes, forehead shape and other features.
The woman noted that she saw a man whose life changed for the better after a face transplant.
“It made me proud,” she said. In addition, all doubts about the correctness of its decision to donate organs for transplantation are gone.
Sanders met not only with Lilly, but also with her one-year-old son, who himself was asked to be handed to him. In addition, the man looked at the family photo album with interest, which Lilly took with her.
After the meeting, Sanders and Ross said they plan to continue to communicate closely. In addition, Sanders said he wanted to create a trust for Leonardo and invest money in it so that the boy could get a good education in the future.
