8-year-old woman struggles with the consequences of a spider bite: she faces amputation of her arm

Jenna Allen, from Edenhope in Victoria, was bitten on the forearm by a redback spider while rummaging through a shoebox on her terrace in 2014. She spoke about the terrible excruciating pain in which she lives after being bitten, reports Yahoo.

Jenna was bitten by Latrodectus hasselti, a species of red-backed spider also called the Australian black widow. The species belongs to the genus of black widows, which are found in all parts of the world except Antarctica.

“Suddenly I felt a burning sensation in my left forearm, and a black spot crawled across it. Thinking it was a bug, I brushed it off,” said the 28-year-old mother of two. “But when my arm began to throb with pain, a strange painful feeling took over my whole body.”

At once on her hand there was a long convex lump, Jenna has felt sharp pains in a stomach and a throbbing headache. She called her father for help and scanned the terrace for the insect. It was then that she saw the redback spider.

According to the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Melbourne, the venom of the redback spider acts directly on the nerves. The bite of this spider can be fatal, but no deaths have been reported in Australia since 1955, a year before the antivenom was introduced.

Jenna was rushed to the hospital an hour away, where she received two doses of antidote, but was told in the following days that the wound had become necrotic and the infection was "eating away" her skin.

The skin graft from her hip at first seemed to work and Jenna's life returned to normal, but a year later, she noticed something on her arm that made her heart go cold.

Expensive treatment

A series of mosquito-bitten bumps spread across the skin graft, which soon turned green and became painful, weeping sores.

Doctors bandaged the wound with special bandages, which cost Jenna a fabulous $ 1300 a week, since Medicare did not cover this wound.

Two years after the spider bite, a new doctor discovered she had a chronic ulcer and speculated that the poison might have triggered an immune response and caused her body to reject the skin graft.

Jenna spent three months in the hospital where the burn nurses changed her bandages. But the pain was so intense that she needed local anesthesia for every procedure, and at times she had cramps.

Doctors discover precancerous cells

In 2020, doctors found precancerous cells around the spider bite and said if the wound continues to spread, Jenna may need to be amputated.

Now the young mother is forced to make seven-hour trips back and forth every two weeks to see the doctors who are watching her wound.

“The mental and physical toll this wound has taken not only on me, but also on my family, is debilitating,” she said, adding that simply putting her daughter in the stroller was “excruciatingly painful.”
