A retaliatory strike: an American hacker hacked the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry
The American television channel CNN reported that an American hacker known as Jester (“Jester”) hacked the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
In a conversation with journalists, the hacker explained his actions with a desire to respond to the hacks of American websites, for which the US authorities place responsibility on Russia.
“I wanted to poke them in the eye so they would stop thinking that the US was just taking the hit. Again,” Jester told CNN.
Jester claims that he left a message on the site that said, in part: “Get over it. You may be able to intimidate neighboring countries, but this is America, you can’t scare us.”
On the hacker's website also appeared a screenshot of the hacked site and an explanation that it was opened using an XSS vulnerability, which allows placing arbitrary html-code on the site’s pages.
Hacked but old
The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that the hackers had really hacked into the site of the department, but not acting, but the old one, which had not been used for a long time.
According to Zakharova, now experts are trying to figure it out. According to her, until she can confirm that an American hacker stands behind the burglary.
Zakharova noted that the main website of the ministry is operating normally, although since 2013, it has increasingly been subjected to cyber attacks.
The current website of the Ministry of 23 October really worked as usual, no unusual messages were noticed on it.
The screenshots of the hacked site that appeared on the web also suggest that this is the old site of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Who is the Jester
The American hacker Jester has been known for about 5 years. He first appeared on Twitter about 6 years ago.
Little is known about his career, but Jester himself claims that he served 5 for years in the US Army in Afghanistan.
The hacker claims that his actions are guided by a sense of American patriotism. He runs a regular Jester's Court blog on hacking and networking issues, including Internet security.
It is known that Jester declared war on jihadist, from his point of view, websites that published propaganda materials and tried to recruit extremists.
According to CNN, in his own words, the hacker “put down” 179 such sites, after which he stopped counting them.
Some time ago, Jester announced that he was ceasing his online activities, but after an armed attack by extremists on the editorial office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, he again made itself felt, hacking the Islamist website and putting on it Charlie Hebdo cartoons.
Over the 5 years of his hacker “career,” Jester has become something of a celebrity. In the United States, fans wear T-shirts and caps with his logo and quotes, and he has about 58 followers on Twitter.
The Jester laptop is on display at the International Spy Museum in Washington.
The hacker claims to act without any approval or support from the US authorities.
However, according to CNN, by cracking the jihadist sites, Jester, in his own words, sends information to the American intelligence about their visitors and administrators.
However, Jester's hacking activities are illegal in the United States.
“The Jester’s” statements about his own activities on the network, wrote the American magazine Time, are impossible to verify.
But if this is true, Jester is one of the most powerful hackers in the world, Time wrote in its 2015 article "The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet".
Jester appears on this list along with Justin Bieber, Alexei Navalny, Kim Kardashian and Barack Obama.
Earlier, US authorities have accused Russian hackers of hacking into the servers of the Democratic Party. Russian authorities deny their involvement in hacking.
