Why in the USA Christmas trees are thrown into lakes
For several decades, the departments of fisheries and environmental management in some US states have collected dried Christmas trees and thrown them into lakes. Thus, environmentalists recreate the relief of the lake, spoiled by human activity - it helps the fry to hide from large fish and promotes the growth of algae, writes Meduza.
“Imagine the bottom of the lake without vegetation, it is bare, one can say two-dimensional. By placing these trees in a lake, you create a three-dimensional space for fish. In essence, you are creating a whole ecosystem, ”said Joseph Sullivan, who is in charge of fisheries in California parks and reserves.
Department staff clarified that spruces are thrown into the water with 25-kilogram cargo. Most often sand is used as a load, placed in a biodegradable bag.
According to Sullivan, since 1990, his department every year was processing trees in this way, and by 2014, environmentalists were able to restore the relief of the lakes. Artificial reefs from the trees continue to create in Illinois and Arizona. Environmentalists say that anyone can thus process the dried tree, but emphasize that it is better to consult with the local department of environmental management.
