Caring American: Neighbors called the police after seeing the mother send her daughter to walk the dog

An Illinois woman had to endure a visit from police and social workers after she allowed her eight-year-old daughter to walk her dog around the block. Corey Wyden has not been charged and shared her experience with American viewers in an appearance on "Good Morning America" ​​on Friday.

The incident occurred when daughter Widen went for a walk with the dog Marshmallow. The stranger saw a girl who was walking the dog alone, and called the police, reports USA Today. According to the mother, she can see most of the neighborhood from the windows of her house, and walking her dog, a Maltese, is the only time her daughter is left unattended.

The family lives in a safe part of the Chicago suburbs. But a worried neighbor nevertheless called police, “thinking the girl was under five years old,” the mother said on air.

Like many other states, Illinois does not have clear child care laws. Under the law, children under 14 are considered homeless "if he or she is left unattended for an unreasonable period of time without regard to the mental or physical health, safety or welfare of the minor."

Wyden told reporters that when her story caught the attention of the whole country, she received a lot of positive messages. She wrote her mother, who found themselves in the same situations without any support.

Some states, like Utah, have passed laws that make it clear that children can do certain things alone—go to school, play in the yard. These laws are driven in part by the "free range" parenting movement, which values ​​children's independence.

To critics who say an 8-year-old girl is too young to go out without an adult, Wyden responded: “I would say that 8-year-olds are different... every neighborhood is different, every parent is different. Therefore, it is impossible to make such general condemnatory conclusions.”
