Chaos due to a snow flurry: there are dead and dozens of wounded
Millions of people in the north-east of the country are faced with snow flurries and cold winds, whose temperature reaches zero Fahrenheit (-17 degrees Celsius) and below.
On Wednesday, snow squalls spanning the entire region were fatal.
Two people were killed in Pennsylvania, and dozens were injured in a massive accident at the Interstate 80 150 miles (241 km) northwest of Philadelphia.
Part of the highway was still closed on Thursday, December 19th.
AccuWeather meteorologist Jake Soyda said the flurry probably began in bright sunlight when the surface of the road heated by the sun and tires was above zero. Thus, the falling snow melted, and then quickly froze, creating ice. When the sun disappeared, the snow continued to fall.
“The temperature of the road due to heavy snow can cause the road to freeze quickly. This is a particularly dangerous threat, which is often created by snow squalls, ”Soyda emphasized.
Meanwhile, temperatures from Maine to Virginia reached 15 Fahrenheit (-9 Celsius) or lower on Thursday morning, AccuWeather reports. Due to gusts of wind it seemed that the street was much colder.
“As high blood pressure rises during Thursday, temperatures will average 8-16 degrees Fahrenheit below normal,” said Paul Pastelock, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.
Philadelphia, New York, and Boston ran into temperatures around 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 Celsius) and gusts of wind at speeds above 20 miles (32,1 km) per hour. In Boston, the temperature reached -3 degrees (-19 Celsius). Residents of Newark (New Jersey) are faced with an air temperature of 1 degree Fahrenheit (-17 Celsius).
On Thursday, almost everywhere north of the Mason Dixon line, cooling was observed throughout the day.
“Today will be much colder than it was earlier this winter,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio warned on Twitter. “Make sure you are well-dressed and don't leave the street longer than necessary.”
The National Weather Service issued warnings of a snow flurry from West Virginia to New England. A dramatic slow-motion video filmed at One World Trade Center shows how a flurry rushes through Manhattan.

“New Yorkers should consider potential hazardous road conditions. It is recommended to be careful, turn on the headlights and move slowly if you are traveling through a snow flurry, ”warns the city emergency agency.
