The second stage of the election debate of the Democrats: what to expect and where to look

Democratic presidential candidates this week will try to break away from rivals during the election debates in Detroit, divided into two days, each of which will be attended by 10 candidates, writes Voice of America.

The flagships of progressive ideology Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will take the stage on July 30, and race favorite Joe Biden will take July on July 31.

Former Vice President Biden, with a clear, but declining, margin in the polls, last week, along with several other candidates, held meetings with African-American human rights organizations.

The media is still actively discussing the comments of President Donald Trump about four non-white congressmen. Democrats call the president's words racist.

The racial question became relevant in the struggle between democrats, when California senator Kamala Harris began to ask Biden uncomfortable questions on this topic during the June debates in Miami, broadcast by NBC News.

“This debate may be the last chance for many of these 20 candidates to leave their mark,” he said. “And the best way to do this is to get into a fight with the leaders, be aggressive and really attack them.”

Biden is also criticized for having supported a tough crime law in 1994, which Harris said led to mass arrests of minorities.

Other analysts say that voters are more interested in economic issues.

“I think they need to focus on issues such as health care, education policy, or job creation,” says Michael Trogott of the University of Michigan.

Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders, who ranks second in most polls, is desperately trying to keep a break from another progressive politician - senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren.

“We need an election campaign that causes a surge of energy and enthusiasm among the American people,” he said.

Debates give candidates a chance to address voters directly, which they will also do in the coming months at local events.
