Ukrainian World Congress asks not to give 'Oscar' to the film with Tom Cruise because of its ties with Russia

On March 12 in Los Angeles (California) the award ceremony of the prestigious film award "Oscar" will take place. Among the nominees is the film "Top Gun: Maverick" with Tom Cruise in the title role. However, Ukrainians are calling for the film to be excluded or not to vote for it. What's the matter, the publication said UNIAN.

The film was nominated in six categories. However, his participation in the award was in jeopardy.

The World Congress of Ukrainians calls for the removal of “Top Gun: Maverick” from all nominations, since it was financed by Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, a man close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who started the war in Ukraine.

“The film was financed by the owner of the football club, Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian oligarch who has been sanctioned in Ukraine. Unlike the original film, Top Gun: Maverick does not contain any direct or indirect references to Russia. We call on the Film Academy to refuse Russian money and refrain from voting for the film at the 95th Oscars,” the press service of the Ukrainian World Congress reports on Facebook.

In addition, the Ukrainians called on the Academy to publicly condemn the war in Ukraine directly during the ceremony.

This is a film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise. The world premiere of the film took place on April 28, 2022 in Las Vegas (Nevada). The film took 12th place in the list of the highest grossing films in the history of cinema.
