For the first time in 55 years, a US commercial aircraft flew to Cuba

The flight from Fort Lauderdale to Santa Clara, the central part of Cuba, on Wednesday morning took only 51 a minute, but was an important step in normalizing relations between communist Cuba and the United States.
JetBlue launched the first regular commercial flight between two Cold War opponents and an example of how the two countries normalize relations. Soon 9 other US airlines will follow their routes to Cuba from various US cities.
In early September, flights will open with Cuba Silver Airways and American Airlines.
The cities of departure for Havana will be Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, New York and 4 cities in the state of Florida: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa. Flights from Chicago, Philadelphia and Minneapolis to other Cuban cities, except for Havana, have already been approved.
Before leaving Fort Lauderdale International Airport, the Airbus 320 was solemnly poured over with water, and Cuban officials at the Abel Santamaría airport welcomed the flight when it landed.
US law still prohibits most tourist travel to Cuba. However, US President Barack Obama has authorized exceptions for other types of travel, including family visits, business trips, journalistic visits and educational tours.
Cuba is experiencing a tourist boom after the normalization of diplomatic relations with the United States in December 2014.
In 2015, the Cuban government reported that 161 233 Americans visited the island - compared to 91 254 in 2014.
