US Supreme Court to determine the fate of millions of illegal immigrants
The US Supreme Court is preparing to determine the fate of about four million illegal immigrants. On Monday, judges will hear introductory speeches by the parties in a historic case involving Barack Obama’s presidential decrees on immigration.
The court decision will have far-reaching implications for presidential decrees of future administrations. Of particular relevance to the case is the fact that the imperfections of the American immigration system have become one of the key topics of the election campaign.
Plaintiffs in the US v. Texas case ask the court to determine whether Obama's decrees from 2014 to suspend the deportation of certain categories of immigrants within the government’s determination of immigration policies, or the president exceeded his constitutional powers by creating new immigration laws. The decision in this case will affect the outcome of lawsuits in 25 in other states that challenge presidential decrees.
As expected, the defense will insist that the federal government has the right to determine the country's immigration policy and to take independent steps in setting priorities for the deportation of illegal immigrants.
