The widow of the ex-president of Lithuania was suspected of tax evasion for selling real estate in the US

Lithuanian authorities said they filed tax evasion charges against the widow's son, the country's ex-president, because the company he manages and owns with his mother allegedly didn’t pay Euro tax on real estate trading in Florida around 40 000.

Investigation against Kristina Brazauskene, widow of former Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas and her son from her first marriage, Ernestas Butrimas, began after the publication in the media of information about family assets hidden in Florida, the newspaper writes Ocrp.

When asked about this, Christina Brazauskene told reporters that she had never heard of this property.

However, investigators found a mansion near Fort Lauderdale, registered for a company owned by mother and son, while this property was not mentioned in the company's documents. The widow's son of the former Lithuanian president also owned a luxurious condo north of Miami Beach.

The investigation took up finding out where the mother and son took the money to purchase this property.

In cooperation with US law enforcement agencies, the Lithuanian Financial Crime Investigation Service learned that both objects were already sold and that the company received a profit of about 200 000 euros from their sales, but did not pay any taxes.

Brazauskiene is the widow of Algirdas Brazauskas, the first president of Lithuania to lead the independent state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. She married Brazauskas after his presidential term ended. Therefore, she cannot officially be considered a former first lady.

In Lithuania, tax evasion is a crime for which violators can receive a fine or up to six years in prison.
