A new Mriya aircraft is being built in Ukraine: it will be more technologically advanced and lighter than its predecessor destroyed by the Russians

Aircraft designers at the Antonov enterprise are already working on the creation of a new Mriya, but in the meantime the fuselage of the destroyed aircraft is being dismantled. General designer Vladislav Vlasik said that experts are looking for surviving parts and structural elements to use them in the new aircraft, reports BuildingTech.

The new An-225, which will be created on the basis of the unfinished twin brother of the Mriya, will not differ in appearance from the destroyed Mriya, as the designers say. But inside it will be a completely new plane with the most modern equipment.

Let's remember that a huge plane, called "Mriya" or "dream" in Russian, was parked at an airfield near Kiev when it was attacked by Russian occupiers. It was a shocking end for an aircraft that had served for more than 30 years since Soviet times.

An-225s were sometimes called in to provide air assistance during crises in other countries. After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, he delivered humanitarian aid to the neighboring Dominican Republic. In the early days of the Covid pandemic, it was used to transport medical supplies to the affected areas.

His popularity in the aviation world was enormous. He often drew large crowds wherever he appeared, especially when the aircraft was the star of an air show.

The new Mriya will be even more powerful and lighter than the previous one by at least 10 tons, which means that the aircraft will carry even more cargo and fly longer and further. “The design stage is now underway; a preliminary technical design of the updated aircraft has already been created. We understand that the An-225 aircraft must be modernized, that is, restoring it in the condition it was in is inappropriate,” said Vladislav Vlasik.

It will be very expensive to rebuild the An-225, but international donors are already ready to give money. “The restoration of Mriya is the restoration of the country. As soon as Mriya is rebuilt, we can say that the Ukrainian aviation industry and the power of Ukraine have been rebuilt,” said the general designer of the Antonov state enterprise.

Mriya was the heaviest aircraft ever built. Powered by six turbofan engines, it had a maximum payload of 250 tons. The aircraft boasted the largest wingspan of any aircraft in service.

Only one An-225 was built by the Kyiv company Antonov, which came up with the project. It first flew in 1988 and was in service until its destruction by Russian forces.
