In the United States, a famous Ukrainian dissident died.

In the American city of Baltimore on the morning of December 17, the Ukrainian linguist, author of many dictionaries and dissident 95-year-old Svyatoslav Karavansky died. For the last 37 years he has lived in exile, reports “Radio Liberty«.

Karavansky was born on December 24 1920 of the year in Odessa. During the Second World War was captured by the Nazis. Freed in 1942, Karavansky studied at Odessa University, participated in the underground OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) under the pseudonym "Balzac".

Karavansky in 1944 year, they landed from a plane onto the territory of the USSR. However, he was arrested a few days later, and on February 7, the military tribunal sentenced the Karavan 1945 years to camps on 25. With the Soviet imprisonment, Karavansky was released almost after 16 years under an amnesty. He engaged in journalistic, literary and philological work, which he began in the camps.

For the samizdat article “About one political mistake” written in 1965, criticizing the Russification of the Karavansky High School, he was arrested by the KGB. He was sent to a strict regime camp. The total time spent by Caravansky in the Soviet camps was 31 year.

In February, 1979 was declared a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. After the liberation, 30 November 1979 Karavansky with his wife Nina Motley emigrated to the United States.

The Soviet government deprived both of them of citizenship. Karavansky published a number of works on linguistics, in particular “Practical Dictionary of Synonyms of the Ukrainian Language” and “Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Complex Vocabulary”. Knight of the Order of Courage, 1st degree.
