In the US, a transgender person is running for governor - for the first time in history
For the first time, a transgender woman will compete for the post of governor in the United States. Christine Hallcuist will represent the Democratic Party in elections in Vermont. Victory in the elections will allow her to become the most senior transgender in the system of American power.
In the Democratic primary, Hallquist managed to beat three other candidates, including a 14-year-old teenager. The elections themselves will take place in November 2018, writes Air Force
“We made history tonight. I am very proud to represent the Democrats today,” Hallquist said, speaking to supporters after her victory in the party vote. She was supported by 46% of voters.
Before the gender change, the candidate for governor's name was David Hallquist. In an interview with the Guardian, the democrat admitted that participating in the gubernatorial race was not the hardest test for her: “I tell everyone that this is not the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It seems to me that compared to changing gender, everything else is generally quite easy.”
In her election program, Hallquist promised to expand access to the Internet in Vermont, as well as to pursue an energy policy to meet environmental requirements. Earlier, Hallquist led the energy company Vermont Electric Cooperative.
Hallquist said that Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election had involved her in politics. In 2017, she took part in several protests in Washington, and then completely quit and nominated for governor.
“On November 8, 2016, I realized that the world had changed. I went to bed, it was a real trauma, a kind of “political depression”, I didn’t know what to do. Many in our country shed many tears because of what happened that day,” Hallquist says.
Rival Hallquist in the election will be the current governor Phil Scott, representing the Republican Party. He is considered the favorite in the race, despite the fact that, according to polls, in the last year his popularity has decreased. In the presidential election in 2016, the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won in Vermont.
If Hallquist wins, he will become the highest-ranking, but not the only, transgender official in the United States. In 2017, journalist Danica Roem became the first openly transgender person to serve in the state legislature when she won the election in Virginia. Jess Herbst, also openly transgender, serves as mayor of New Hope, Texas.
