One in four babies born in the United States is a child of migrants. Such data is published in the report Pew. Researchers say that in 2014, the share of immigrant children among newborns was 23%, while in 1970 it was only 7%.

Journalists ABC News note that the birth rate has also increased over these 40 years: in 1970, 3,74 million babies were born in the United States, and in 2014 - 4 million. At the same time, immigrants, the authors of the study note, make a significant contribution to the growth of the birth rate. “Nearly a quarter of babies are children of women born outside the United States,” explains Gretchen Livingston, a senior fellow at the Pew Research Center and one of the authors of the report. “In fact, we expected a downward trend in the birth rate, and if not for the influx of immigrants, the number of newborns would have dropped sharply.”

It is noteworthy that among immigrants whose children are born in the United States, about a third are undocumented. That is, it turns out that among all newborns, about 7% have parents who are illegal immigrants. And this is a very good indicator; several years ago there were 9% of such parents. Researchers suggest that all of these illegal immigrants have been living in the country for quite a long time - more than 10 years. “The theory that the majority comes here illegally only to have children is not confirmed. That's not happening, says Jeffrey Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Research Center. “We see that these people have lived in the United States for many years.”
