In the USA, a blood test is offered that can detect 50 types of cancer: where and at what price it is done
The Mayo Clinic is developing a revolutionary blood test that can detect over 50 different types of cancer at all stages. The edition told in more detail Fox Business.
A test known as Gallerywas created in partnership with Menlo Park, a California-based biotech and pharmaceutical company called Grail.
During blood sampling, Galleri looks in the bloodstream for signals that may be associated with cancer.
The test uses next-generation sequencing and machine learning algorithms to analyze patterns of extracellular DNA (cfDNA) methylation in the bloodstream, which may carry cancer-specific information.
DNA methylation is a process used by cells to regulate gene expression. If a cancer signal is detected, Galleri will pinpoint where the cancer is originating in the body to help healthcare providers determine the appropriate course of action to treat the patient.

Currently, recommended cancer screenings in the United States cover only five different types of cancer and can only detect one type at a time. According to Grail, 71% of cancer deaths are caused by cancers that are not usually screened.
Galleri, which is not covered by insurance, costs $ 949 and must be ordered by a licensed healthcare provider, such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, or paramedic. Grail says Galleri currently has 89% accuracy in predicting the origin of cancer, and estimates that about 1 in every 200 people will have a false-positive result.

Results usually come about two weeks after the blood is drawn. Galleri is recommended for adults with an increased risk of cancer, such as those aged 50 and over, and should be used in addition to other standard cancer screening tests such as colonoscopy or mammography.
Grail is currently working to obtain full Galleri approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
