In the United States recall dangerous blueberries: lead found in the berries

Lead is a substance commonly found in the environment. It is present in dust, water and even food. But if lead levels exceed a certain threshold, and if a person is regularly exposed to higher concentrations, lead poisoning can occur. That's why BrandStorm has recalled two shipments of Natierra freeze-dried blueberries.

According to the company, these frozen blueberries may contain lead levels above the recommended limits of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

BrandStorm recently announced a recall of two batches of Natierra Organic Freeze Dried Blueberries that may contain elevated levels of lead. In addition, the FDA issued a press release on this link.

A laboratory in Maryland found a higher concentration of lead in freeze-dried blueberries, which was recalled. An on-site investigation showed that the problem may be related to the origin of the fruit, namely Lithuania. As a result, more aggressive heavy metal monitoring may be required.

BrandStorm included two batches of Natierra freeze-dried blueberries in its recall:

• Lot 2021363-1, Best By Date: 12/2024, 1 Serving, 1,2 oz (34 g), UPC 812907011160
• Lot 2022026-1, Best By Date: 01/2025, 1 Serving, 1,2 oz (34 g), UPC 812907011160

The company sold these products in the US through retail stores and over the Internet. They come in white and blue pouches with the Natierra logo and branding.

Risk of lead poisoning

Lead exposure is unavoidable, but only higher concentrations of the metal and prolonged exposure can lead to lead poisoning.

People with high levels of lead in their blood may not show any symptoms. But lead poisoning will affect the nervous system and internal organs. In addition, acute lead poisoning can cause abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or reduced urine output.

It is important to note that children are more vulnerable to lead poisoning than adults. After prolonged exposure, children may experience learning problems, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems.

“Lead accumulates in our bodies, and you want to minimize your exposure,” Dr. Kenneth Rosenman, a professor of medicine at Michigan State University, told BGR in a statement. “Presumably you would have to eat a lot of blueberries to get lead poisoning.”

He continued: “It's very unusual for lead to come into contact with fresh food, because lead in fresh food hasn't been a problem and shouldn't be a problem. In general, lead is not a problem in foods and we need to learn more about all the circumstances and how the blueberries were contaminated.”

BrandStorm says it has received no reports of side effects related to the Natierra freeze-dried blueberry recall.

What should you do

The company advises customers not to consume Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries from the two recall batches. Instead, they must discard the product and claim a refund at the place of purchase.

Buyers will need to verify the lot codes of the respective packages in order to receive a refund. It should also be noted that people who have purchased the product online should contact BrandStorm directly for a refund.
