The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suspended all domestic flights across the United States on Jan. 11 after a system that provided pilots with pre-flight safety warnings went offline, reports CNN.

The association representing U.S. airlines, Airlines for America, says the outage "causes significant operational delays."

United Airlines said it was temporarily delaying all domestic flights.

American Airlines said in a statement that they are "closely monitoring the situation, which affects all airlines, and are working with the FAA to minimize disruptions."

The NOTAMS system, which failed, provides "critical safety information," the airline said.

According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, US President Joe Biden ordered the Department of Transportation (DOT) to investigate the outage after being briefed on the situation. “At this point there is no evidence of a cyber attack, but the President has directed DOT to conduct a full investigation into the causes,” she wrote on Twitter.

U.S. Transportation Chief Pete Buttigieg tweeted: “I contacted the FAA this morning about a glitch in a key safety information system for pilots. The FAA is working to resolve this issue quickly and safely so that air traffic can resume normal operations."

FlightAware, which tracks delays and cancellations, showed that as of 8:30 a.m. ET, about 3704 flights to the United States had been delayed, with 558 flights canceled within and among them. And their number is constantly growing.

Despite the current situation, international flights to the US continued to operate from Amsterdam and Paris. A spokesman for Schiphol Airport said "a workaround has been proposed" and flights are still departing from Amsterdam.

According to the press service of the airport, flights from the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport were not canceled, but delays were expected. Frankfurt Airport also said that it did not affect its operation.

A spokesman for London Heathrow Airport said they were "not aware of any flight cancellations or that flights to the US have recently departed."

Commercial airline pilots use NOTAM to obtain real-time information about flight hazards and restrictions. The FAA stipulates that NOTAM should not be relied upon as the sole source of information and therefore some flights may satisfy safety requirements using other data.

The January 11 incident is the second major crisis to hit the US air force in weeks. A severe winter storm at the end of the holidays caused severe damage and forced the collapse of Southwest Airlines, which affected thousands of passengers.
