There is an outbreak of acute myelitis (so-called AFM) in Washington state - 8 children have already been hospitalized. The disease is quite rare and occurs when children suddenly experience weakness or paralysis due to inflammation in the spinal cord.

All victims are from 3 to 14 years old, all from different districts of Washington. Three children got sick in Seattle. At the same time, 5 children have already been sent home after receiving medical care.

It clarifies Parent herald, usually patients feel weakness in their arms or legs, sometimes complete paralysis occurs. At the same time, the Center for Disease Control clarifies that other than weakness, other symptoms are extremely rare - there is usually no pain or numbness.

Meanwhile, among the sick there are those who have paralysis touched the muscles of the neck and head. The babies have problems with eye movement, swallowing.

State health authorities said they are doing everything possible to prevent the infection from spreading further. Meanwhile, since the beginning of this year, the United States has recorded 89 cases of AFM in 33 different states. The disease is still considered extremely rare, with only a few cases per million. The Centers for Disease Control recommends remembering to practice good hygiene - wash your hands and get all necessary vaccinations.
