A Saratov Airlines passenger plane, flying from Moscow to Orsk, disappeared from radar 7 minutes after departure from Domodedovo. After this, it became known that the plane crashed near the village of Argunovo in the Ramensky district of the Moscow region. There were 65 passengers and 6 crew members on board the plane. They all died.

What happened

“Today, February 11, the An-148 aircraft (registration number RA-61704) of Saratov Airlines, operating flight 6B-703 Moscow-Orsk, according to the flight director of the Moscow service of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise ATM, stopped communicating with dispatchers after several minutes after departure from Domodedovo airport. There were 65 passengers and 6 crew members on board. Saratov Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed in the plane crash on the Moscow-Orsk route,” the airline said in a press release.

When the Saratov Airlines An-148 crashed in the Moscow region, a “strong explosion” was heard even at a distance of several kilometers.​

An eyewitness to the events Zhanna told RBCthat she heard a “very large explosion” at approximately 14:27 (07:27 New York time).

“I live in a neighboring village. Planes are still flying. The scene of the tragedy is blocked,” eyewitness Zhanna told RBC.

A resident of the Moscow region, Anton Oskin, said that in the village of Stepanovskoye, near which the plane crashed, his relatives live, who saw the wreckage of the plane.

“They called me and told me [about the incident]. They heard the sound of turbines, then a loud bang, everything was shaking around. My brother and his godfather went towards the crash, saw the wreckage of the plane, but did not go further. The plane crashed about 2 km from a residential village and several hundred meters from summer cottages and garden plots. There is a large corn field and forest there, nothing abnormal has happened before,” Oskin told RBC.

The explosion was felt at a distance of three kilometers.

“I live 3 km [from the scene of the incident]. There was a strong bang around 14:20 p.m., such that the walls shook,” said Elena Shorina, a resident of the Ramensky district.

“We are about 10 km [from where the plane crashed]. About two hours ago we heard an explosion and the windows rattled, and the house shook. After 40-60 minutes the helicopters took off. You can still hear the sirens,” said Zhanna Gimatdinova, a resident of the Ramensky district.

Causes of disaster

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The agencies, citing sources, reported that it could have collided with a Russian Post helicopter, but the company itself said that they do not have helicopters at all. At the same time, back in 2013, TASS reported that Russia’s first mail helicopter began operating in the Khabarovsk Territory. Russian Post received the Mi-2, capable of transporting about 3,5 cubic meters of cargo.

Russian Post explained where the letters at the crash site came from. A company representative told TASS that there was a bag of correspondence weighing about 20 kilograms on the plane.

As Gazeta.Ru reported, citing a source familiar with the investigation of the disaster, the pilot of the crashed airliner informed dispatchers about the malfunction and asked permission to make an emergency landing at Zhukovsky airport.

However, a representative of the Moscow air hub later told TASS that the An-148 did not request permission to make an emergency landing at Zhukovsky airport. “There was no request for an emergency landing from the An-148 in Zhukovsky,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

An-148 with number RA-61704, owned by the Ilyushin Finance company, was leased by Saratov Airlines in 2017 and has been flying passengers since March 25.
