Russia has started training Internet police: they will punish for 'wrong' publications on the Internet

Russia has begun training “media police” - specialists who will identify and block “extremist and destructive materials” and pirated content on the Internet, reports IZ.

This direction of undergraduate education appeared at the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANGiDS) under the President of the Russian Federation.
The volume of content that is inconvenient for the Russian authorities on social networks and instant messengers is constantly growing, as experts have stated. Roskomnadzor said that over the past six months the volume of “negative content” on the Internet has grown by more than 16%.

It is assumed that upon completion of training, media police officers will receive one of the specializations: investigation of offenses against citizens (cyberbullying, stalking), legal entities (piracy) or the state (extremism).

“The tasks of “media security” include the fight against the propaganda of terrorism, the ideology of criminal culture, suicide among teenagers, and insulting the feelings of believers. The program is being implemented with the support of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee,” said Lidiya Malygina, head of the department of media support of state interests and national security at the Institute of Law and National Security of RANGIGS.

Currently, Roskomnadzor is responsible for blocking information on the Internet. In August, this department announced that since the beginning of 2022 it had identified and blocked 30 thousand calls for mass unrest, 190 thousand materials with false information, 85 thousand materials with elements of extremist content.

The boundaries of “extremist and destructive materials” are vague. It is assumed that everything will be monitored: from information on websites and telegram channels to citizens’ social networks.

“Preparing specially trained people who will monitor destructive content is extremely important in such a rapidly developed Internet. It is also necessary to build a system for the prevention of destructive phenomena,” Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education Yana Lantratova.
