In St. Petersburg on May 1, a procession “For Free Petersburg – Free Elections!”, coordinated with the authorities, took place. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Makarov said that the opposition used the May Day demonstration “for provocations” and the police acted “in accordance with the law”:

“The actions of the opposition during the May Day demonstration are an admission of its political failure. Increasingly, national holidays are used for provocations, designed to unite rather than divide people,” Makarov said. “I would like to note that the police acted in full accordance with the law. I’m sure the residents of St. Petersburg have already made their conclusions about who really protects their interests.”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan told Interfax that they stopped the “unauthorized holding of the Monstration”, since the authorities of Makhachkala refused to allow the organizers of the march to hold the event. The authorities explained the refusal by saying that there were allegedly not enough police officers in the city to ensure the safety of the march participants.

In Syktyvkar detained activist Vera Tereshenkova, which went on a single picket on Stefanovskaya Square with a poster against the ban on rallies in the square.

In Krasnodar detained one activist.

Let us note that the OVD-Info publication previously wrote that on May 1, more than a hundred rallies, organized without the participation of the authorities, will take place throughout Russia. Every year the number of May Day arrests is growing. In 2016, police detained 27 people in Moscow and St. Petersburg alone. In 2017, the figure increased to 37, and in 2018 the number of detainees increased to 53 people.
