The state is offering a $ 100 savings bond to everyone between the ages of 16 and 35 who gets vaccinated, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice said at a briefing. This is part of a measure to encourage young people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Our children today probably don't realize how important they are to us getting to herd immunity,” Justice said. “I try to find a way that really motivates them.”

The initiative will be applied even retroactively to people in this age group who have already been vaccinated. The initiative is funded with money from the CARES Act.

The introduction of the vaccine in West Virginia started very well earlier this year. Despite challenges such as widespread lack of internet access, this largely rural state has managed to fully vaccinate such a large percentage of the population.

But as the eligibility for vaccination expanded, the rate of vaccination slowed down. The state is currently ranked 29th in the country, according to the vaccine tracking system, which says 29% of the state's population has been fully vaccinated and 35,3% have received at least one dose.

West Virginia began vaccinating residents ages 16 and older in mid-March, but continues to prioritize vaccinating people over 65. According to Justice, as of Monday, April 26, more than 78% of people in the older age group received at least one dose, and 68,5% were fully vaccinated.

Vaccine demand has plummeted in recent weeks, with most of those who wanted to get vaccinated getting vaccinated, and the rest of West Virginia's just not wanting to get vaccinated.

Thus, the state has turned its attention to vaccinating young people, who are becoming infected at a noticeably higher rate.

People under the age of 20 accounted for 26% of all cases statewide, up from 16% previously.

Justice said the state's 380 residents aged 000 to 16 "don't get vaccinated as quickly as we would like."

“If we really want to move the situation forward, we must vaccinate our youth,” he is convinced.

Justice's goal is to vaccinate more than 70% of West Virginia's population. He stressed that the roughly 80% of people in that age group who have not yet gotten a shot could raise the overall vaccination rate statewide.

“If we can reach 70%, then we will achieve herd immunity,” he said. “If you do this, masks will disappear, hospitalizations will disappear, and the number of deaths will be minimal.”
