In New York, a protest was held against Valery Gergiev’s concert with the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. The reason was that the famous Russian conductor signed a letter in support of the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.
“4.5 years ago Valery Gergiev signed a letter from Russian cultural figures in support of the annexation of Crimea. But for some reason, he is again giving concerts not there, but in New York,” writes Ukrainian journalist Yulia Gorodetskaya on her page on the social network Facebook.
She added that activists of the SIGNERBUSTERS movement, which opposes Russian artists who support the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine, “went out to protest again. Today, because of Halloween, the picket turned out to be elegant.”
“It’s funny (not really), but on his last visit, Gergiev gave an interview in which he renounced signing the shameful document. Once again. But he did not revoke this very signature again, and on the website of the Russian Ministry of Culture you can still find both the letter and the names of Gergiev’s accomplices - https://www.mkrf.ru/…/deyateli-kultury-rossii-v-podderzhku…/“, the journalist added in her post.
“Gergiev himself is a real Halloween character,” says Vladimir Davidenko. “He supports war, but disguises himself as an angel of peace. Moreover, the theme of death is his theme. Remember his concerts in Georgia and Syria. When he played in Ossetia, the bodies of the dead had not yet been removed. And it was the same in Syria.”
“This signature would only be a spit in his own obituary if the comrade had not traveled outside the Russian Federation. But for some reason he constantly travels to civilization, where annexation was certainly condemned. Evil tongues claim that for the dollars, first of all, the women from Brighton, who also found their first channel here, believe in the fascists and in “we can repeat it.” They are 80 percent of the public. But there are also Americans, of course. Today, one spectator talked with the protesters and left, and two more Germans talked, stayed, but said that they would not go anymore and would check the list,” Gorodetskaya wrote.
“This is quite a bit, even terribly small,” says Katya Shraga. “But even for the sake of such results, it’s worth coming to these protests - after work, in the cold and heat.”
