Famous surgeon found dead in New York

A prominent Manhattan surgeon was found dead with a knife in his chest in the bathroom of his Upper East Side apartment on Dec. 10, his body discovered by his 11-year-old daughter.

There were no signs of breaking into the apartment, so the police assume that it was suicide.

In the past few years, the surgeon has been involved in a scandal with a former football player Giants Michael Cox, who accused the doctor of having to end his sports career because of him.

During a game on November 9, 2014, Cox broke his leg and was operated on by Lorich. According to the athlete's lawyer Stephen North, the surgeon repaired Cox's damaged fibula, but did nothing to repair the ankle bone, which was also damaged.

According to the lawyer, during several postoperative visits to the doctor, the athlete's condition worsened, but the cause (injured ankle) was not identified and eliminated.

Now Cox, who has a four-year contract with Giants at $ 2,3 million, most likely will not be able to play football.

“He went to other doctors, they noticed the damaged bone, the condition of which worsened over time, tried to save it and could not,” the lawyer said.

Cox filed a lawsuit against Lorich, the Hospital for Special Surgery and New York-Presbyterian Hospital in May 2016, without specifying the amount of damages he would like to receive.

The lawyer noted that Lorich behaved adequately during their last meeting, North does not believe that the lawsuit could lead to the doctor's suicide.

“I don’t see a connection between our trial, which has been going on for quite a long time, and his death. But you never know what’s going on in other people’s heads,” the lawyer said.
