In New York, the sound of police and ambulance sirens may change
The long and shrill howl of a police or ambulance siren, which has long been part of the soundtrack of any New Yorker over several generations, can be replaced by a less uncomfortable sound.
Local lawmakers have proposed to transfer the city’s law enforcement officers and doctors to sirens, which are used in London and Paris, writes Fox News.
The reason is that, according to experts, sirens of the European type are less disturbing people and making a less significant contribution to noise pollution in the city.
Fox notes that the noise remains in the top lines of complaints of city residents with whom they turn to the authorities. Calls about too loud sirens that sound around the clock, wake people up at night and make the dogs howl in unison, come almost more often than other complaints.
“Europeanized” New York sirens will not become quieter, the publication writes. Their volume, as before, will be 118 decibels. But it is proposed to reduce the sound frequency to the European level, which should make the sounds of sirens less shrill, but noticeable enough to attract the attention of others.
