In Connecticut, a hungry black bear broke into the garage of a Connecticut bakery, scared several employees and ate 60 cupcakes before leaving, reports Insider.

On May 24, Taste by Spellbound workers in Avon were loading cakes into a delivery van when a bear showed up. The state Environmental Protection Agency says between 1000 and 1200 black bears live in Connecticut and were seen in 158 of the state's 169 cities last year.

Bakery owner Miriam Stevens wrote in an Instagram post that she heard employee Maureen Williams "shout heart-rendingly" that there was a bear in the garage.

“She ran into the kitchen as fast as she could and slammed the door leading to the loading area and locked it. The bear then MOVED one of our refrigerators in front of the door,” Williams wrote in the post. “We were all stunned for a second, trying to figure out what to do while she kept the door closed.”

Williams said she screamed to scare away the bear, but it backed off and came back three times.

Williams said the bear lunged at her, so she jumped out of the garage and ran.

60 cupcakes

Surveillance video shows bakery workers walking around the facility trying to scare the bear but then running away after it scared them.

The video shows the bear dragging a container of cupcakes from the garage to the parking lot. Stevens said the bear ate 60 cupcakes.

Williams said the baker finally got the bear to leave by honking his car.

The four-legged thief disappeared when police and officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection arrived.

Frequent cases

No one was hurt in the clash, but it is one of a series of disturbing episodes between black bears and people in Connecticut.

A 74-year-old woman was bitten on her arms and legs last month when she was attacked by a bear while walking her dog in suburban Hartford. This is the first such attack this year. There were two attacks last year, including one in October when a 10-year-old boy was mauled to death in his backyard.

"The frequency and severity of bear-human interactions is increasing," DEEP spokesman Paul Kopleman said Friday.

Statistics compiled by the department show a record 67 reports of bear intrusions into homes in Connecticut in 2022. The previous record was 45 in 2020.

On Friday, the cub wandered into an area near downtown Hartford and climbed a tree. Police, animal control officers and state environmental authorities responded to the call.

The authorities eventually euthanized the bear cub and planned to relocate it.
