Powerful earthquake hits California: thousands without electricity

On the morning of December 20, a 6,4 magnitude earthquake shook the Eureka region of Northern California, according to the US Geological Survey. Thousands of people were left without electricity CNN.

The quake, recorded at 2:34 a.m. PT, hit the Pacific Ocean off the coast, about 12 kilometers from the Humboldt County town of Ferndale, according to the study. It is about 32 km southwest of Eureka and 450 km northwest of Sacramento.

Most homes and businesses in Humboldt County were out of power in the early hours of December 20. According to PowerOutage.us, just before 4 a.m. PT, there were more than 64 power outages from 000 customers tracked in the county.

Electricity provider Pacific Gas & Electric advised customers to avoid turning on gas without obvious signs of a leak, to evacuate if the gas line could be damaged, and to check electrical lines for open or damaged.

The earthquake at Caroline Titus' home in the Ferndale area caused objects to fall and break, as seen in a video she posted on Twitter. “It was a big event. There is no strength now. The house is a big mess,” wrote Titus.

Resident Wendy Pickett Monolias, Eureka, California, was asleep when the earthquake woke her up.

“Once the shaking finally stopped, we grabbed flashlights and phones and looked around. Everything was in ruins,” Pickett said.

“Things fell or broke – an entire bathroom cabinet fell and smashed,” she added. According to her, several of her family heirlooms were also damaged.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and local law enforcement responded to bridge damage in Ferndale, California. The quake caused cracks in the structure, according to CHP and Ferndale police. The bridge has cracked in four places, there is debris on the roadway, and law enforcement is on the scene to help close the road.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, if the crack in the bridge "widens", the roadway could slide.

After that, more than a dozen smaller earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 4,6 points hit the area after that, according to the study.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there is currently no tsunami threat.
