In California, proposed to establish the International Day of Workers 1 May

California Legislative Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (Democratic Party) proposed to establish an International Labor Day in the state, which would be celebrated on 1 in May of each year.

The proposal was submitted to the legislators for another February 16, later (April 3 and May 3) amended, reports TASS.

The author of the document proposes to give the state schools the authority to celebrate the International Workers Day and not to conduct classes on this occasion on May 1. This day, accordingly, will become a paid holiday for teaching staff and staff of secondary schools.

In return, the draft law proposes the exclusion of the birthdays of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln from the list of paid state teachers.

This proposal aroused the indignation of GOP member Matthew Harper of the Republican Assembly.

“Have we really started a competition for the dubious right to become the laughing stock of the entire United States? Establish International Socialist Workers' Day? May Day, the day of parades in the Soviet Union? Americans of my generation grew up with a sense of the threat of the use of nuclear weapons from the USSR,” the parliamentarian was indignant.

The United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday in September and Presidents Day on the third Monday in February. Initially, this date was dedicated to the birthday of the first head of state - George Washington, who was born on February 22, 1732. However, since the 12th US President Abraham Lincoln was also born on February 1809, 16, it was decided to celebrate this holiday somewhere in the middle between the two dates. In American schools, both dates are celebrated depending on the state.

On May 1, Russia and many post-Soviet countries celebrate Labor Day; this day is officially a non-working day. The holiday began back in Soviet times, when it was called “International Workers’ Solidarity Day.”
