On the Internet, collecting donations for the restoration of the Greek economy
The crowdfunding site IndieGoGo is initiated by the British Tom Feeney collecting donations for the restoration of the Greek economy. At the time of writing, for less than three days, users donated about one hundred thousand euros.
"I'm not kidding. Crowdfunding can really help. You just need to get together and do it. I'm tired of watching the Greek crisis repeat itself cycle after cycle while politicians hesitate and hesitate. This affects the lives of real people,” the 29-year-old Briton comments on his initiative.
The campaign was announced last Sunday. The stated goal of the campaign is to raise 1,6 billion euros by July 7th. For a minimum donation of three euros, Feeney promises a reward in the form of a postcard signed by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. For a donation of 6 euros, users are promised a Greek salad delivered to their home, and for 25 euros a bottle of Greek wine. Whether the initiative has been agreed upon with Tsipras himself is not specified.
A referendum was scheduled for July 5, during which the Greeks would have to decide whether to accept the conditions put forward by Greece’s international lenders as a condition for granting further loans.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras himself is urging citizens to reject conditions that would mean further belt-tightening, while European leaders are pointing out that Greeks are essentially being asked to choose whether to stay in the eurozone or leave it.
