Police say a 6-year-old boy shot and killed his 5-year-old sister at their home in eastern Indiana. Their parents were arrested after the incident, reports ABC.

Police said a 6-year-old boy shot and killed his 5-year-old sister at their home in eastern Indiana and their parents were arrested.

Arriving rescuers found a girl with a gunshot wound to the head early on July 26 in a house in Muncie, 100 km northeast of Indianapolis. According to The Star Press, she was taken to the IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Jacob Grayson told investigators that his 6-year-old son pulled one of two loaded handguns from a safe and shot his sister, police said.

Grayson, 28, and his wife, Kimberly Grayson, 27, were charged with preliminary charges of neglect resulting in death, as well as three other counts of neglect, according to Deputy Police Chief Melissa Criswell.

The boy told police that he found the key to the safe in his parents' bedroom and pulled out the gun while his mother slept.

Their mother told police that her sleep only lasted about five minutes. But police described living conditions at the home as "deplorable," noting that "food, garbage, animal feces and furniture were scattered throughout the house" and that feces were smeared on the walls, reports FoxNews.

Investigators said the children likely slept on soiled mattresses on the floor without sheets or blankets. Both parents told police that their son had previously opened a safe that contained two loaded guns, so his father moved him to another location on the chest of drawers.

The parents told police that their son had opened the safe before, and Kimberly Grayson said she and her husband took the boy to the shooting range to teach him how to shoot a pistol.
