The van drove several tens of meters along the pedestrian zone and stopped near the Boqueria market. Local media reported that the driver managed to escape.

Reporters, citing official sources, note that the man who rented the van was a Muslim. According to El Pais, his name is Driss Oukabir. A photograph of the alleged terrorist was also published, writes “Medusa«.

Around 20: 00 local time, the media reported that Ukabir was detained. The police confirmed the detention of the suspect, but did not name him.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rahoi tweeted that he was in contact with local authorities and emergency services.

It later became known that the Islamic State terrorist group took responsibility for the attack. According to SITE Intelligence Group, this was reported by the militant-controlled AMAQ agency.

President Donald Trump offered support for the United States on Twitter a few hours after the attack.

“The United States condemns the terrorist attack in Barcelona, ​​Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be strong, we love you!” he wrote.

Just a few hours after the van hit a crowd of people, another similar incident occurred. The car drove on two policemen. The run was made at the police checkpoint in Barcelona. The driver was "discovered in Sant Just Desvern." Explosives check the car for the presence of dangerous elements. It is not yet known whether this incident is related to the terrorist attack that previously occurred in the city center.

In recent years, extremists often use cars when attacking. According to the British police, the perpetrators of the terrorist attack on the London Bridge on June 3 tried to hire an 7,5-ton truck, but they did not succeed.

In April, the hijacked truck crashed into a crowd in the center of Stockholm. In the case of the attack, two men were arrested, accusing them of terrorism. One of the attackers, a native of Uzbekistan, Rakhmat Akilov, pleaded guilty.

Last December, a truck crashed into a Christmas market in the center of Berlin. As a result, 12 people died, 49 were injured.
