Hurricanes Harvey and Irma destroyed 33 000 jobs
As a result of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the US economy lost 33 jobs in September in the key regions of Florida and Texas. The unemployment rate is 000%.
This is the first time since 2010, when the employment market showed negative data. Earlier in 2017, the average job growth was around 175 000 per month.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed that experts predicted the negative impact of hurricanes on the labor market. Fed Chairman Janet Yellen warned last month that hurricanes would "affect economic activity in the near term."
According to CNBC, the average hurricane removes about 50 000 jobs from the labor market. The data published above has been collected since 12 September, that is, they capture the effects of the tail of Hurricane Irma, as well as Harvey’s extended effects.
Experts are reassured by the fact that low employment rates in September are temporary and will not adversely affect the US economy in the long run.
