Ukrainian MP proposes arrest for 15 days for St. George ribbon
Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko proposes the Parliament to adopt a law banning public use of St. George ribbon.
“Next week I will introduce to parliament a draft law banning the public use of the St. George ribbon as a symbol of Russian aggression against Ukraine, except in cases where the ribbon was used in the symbolism of the orders of World War II veterans, archival, historical documents, museum exhibits and other similar cases.” , he said on the social network Facebook.
As a punishment for wearing a tape, the parliamentarian proposes to “introduce a significant monetary fine.” “If you want to publicly wear a St. George’s ribbon or a Nazi swastika, pay, for example, 5 thousand hryvnia (more than $200) a fine to the budget. If they carry it a second time, I will offer arrest for up to 15 days,” Gerashchenko wrote.
In April, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted law prohibiting part of the Soviet symbolism. In particular, monuments, images, slogans and quotes of Soviet leaders, names of cities, streets and enterprises associated with them were banned. At the same time, images of Lenin can remain in museums and private collections.
In addition, the red poppy became a symbol of victory for the Ukrainians, in the European manner.
