A teacher from New Jersey bequeathed $ 1 million to her students
Geneviève Via Cava worked as a teacher for children with disabilities in the Dumont School District (New Jersey) for almost her entire life. Throughout her life, she has accumulated a small fortune.
The woman died in 2011 year, leaving the accumulated money totaling about a million dollars to students with disabilities, writes USA Today.
According to the terms of the will, starting from the 2019-20 school year, one student with disabilities who wishes to continue his studies at a college or trade school will be eligible for a scholarship of up to 25 000 dollars.
The money is kept in a special fund, and they will be enough to give such scholarships for many years.
Via Cava, who had no children of her own, dedicated most of her life to the Dumont school district and children with disabilities.
According to people who knew Via Cava during her lifetime, she kept in touch with former students. Regardless of how many years have passed since their release, she always talked with them at the meeting, was interested in their life.
In some cases, she helped former students, who were then between the ages of 20 and 30, find a job, thanks to the connections she had in the area.
The teacher also tried to help her students outside the classroom, she met their parents, gave them advice, and recommended special groups that help pupils studying special programs to adapt to everyday life after school.
Via Kava, according to friends, lived a very modest life, abandoning many things. Some thought that this habit remained with her because of the Great Depression experienced, and that her parents had taught her how to save and save money. Having started to lose her hearing, she didn’t even want to buy a hearing aid so as not to spend money.
As it turned out, the woman did all this in order to ultimately help special students of Dumont County to get a better education.
