Off the coast of the United States found the wreckage of the legendary ship Captain Cook
Archaeologists from the Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project (RIMAP) have announced the probable discovery of the wreck of HMS Endeavor, the first ship of British explorer Captain James Cook.
It was on this ship that Cook made his first voyage around the world in 1768-1772, writes New Time with reference to the Air Force.
“RIMAP, in collaboration with the Australian National Maritime Museum, has identified a likely site in Newport Harbor that may contain the Endeavor,” the archaeologists said in a statement.
In their opinion, after the trip around the world, the Endeavor was renamed the Lord Sandwich and became a ship for transporting troops. During the American Revolutionary War, she was sunk by the British fleet near Newport Harbor. Initially, 13 possible locations for Endeavor's sinking were identified. After 25 years of archaeological research in the area, scientists were able to say that "one or two" objects could be the ship Lord Sandwich.
The organization noted that 2018 marks the 250 year since the start of the Cook expedition, when the British discoverer left England and went to the shores of New Zealand and Australia.
But it will take a lot of time to accurately establish the identity of the wreckage. "Detailed work" is due to be completed during planned excavations of the area in 2019.
“Post-excavation will require sampling, wood type testing and other tests that may not provide a definitive answer for another 18 months,” the scientists admit.
The ship Endeavor was born in 1764. It was built on the docks of the seaside town of Whitby to transport coal and was called the Earl of Pembroke. The ship belonged to the category of "cat-bilt" - ships with a straight, wide bow. In the documents of James Cook's maiden voyage, the Endeavor is invariably called a bark.
There were several versions of the fate of the bark after its trip around the world. One by one, the sailing ship ended its days on the Thames. According to another version, the ship, after circumnavigating the world, was sold to a French merchant, who renamed it La Liberte. The Frenchman, in turn, transported it to North America to use as a whaling ship. The third version, about the ship "Lord Sandwich", appears to be true.
Earlier, NV reported that on the embankment of the isle of Skepsholmen in the center of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, found the remains of a royal 17th century flagship. Archaeologists from the Stockholm Maritime Museum believe that the ship was mainly built between the years 1612 and 1614.
